Top Reasons to Visit Las Coloradas Yucatan

Pink Lagoon Mexico - Las Coloradas

Ever seen those seemingly too-good-to-be-true photos of pastel pink lakes on the internet and wondered if they were real and where on earth you could find them? You’re not alone. Las Coloradas are a collection of these lovely pink lakes in Mexico, on the Yucatan Peninsula: they are a stunning addition your next Mexican vacation!

Top Reasons to Visit Las Coloradas:

Trendy spot!

Las Coloradas is becoming an increasingly trendy spot to visit while in Cancun, partly because it’s so different from what you’re going to see on your resort. Once you leave your resort and begin the trek to Rio Lagartos/Las Coloradas you’ll get a chance to see the “real” Mexico- a more authentic experience compared to the typical vacation options you may used to.

You’ll pass by small villages populated by locals - the Las Coloradas area itself is in fact populated by only about 1,000 people. If you’re looking for a more authentic vacation experience this an absolute must on your travel bucket list.

Amazing shots

One of the only places in the world you can see such brilliantly-colored and unusual water features, the pink color is present all year long so it’s never a bad time to stop by for some amazing photos (instagram, anyone?) and a once in a lifetime experience.

The pink color comes from organisms living in the water such as algae and plankton. These lakes are used to produce salt. You are sadly not allowed to enter the main waters as they are private property, but that is a safety precaution as well; the extremely high salt content in the water can cause skin irritation and burning!

Encounter the wild

Las Coloradas is located very near Rio Lagartos, a stunning natural biosphere reserve. Take the opportunity to do a boat tour through mangroves. It provides astonishing vistas as well as a chance to glimpse local wildlife such as flamingos which are a brilliant pink year-round and even give you the chance to take a mayan mud bath.

This area is roughly a 3-hour drive from Cancun and many resort areas where vacationers typically choose to stay, but absolutely worth a day trip to take advantage of these amazing natural experiences.
